The Guidelines are JUST Guidelines - Ask in Project Discussion

The proofreading and formatting guidelines are just guidelines.
There can't be hard fast rules, because:
differences in printing and writing conventions over time, across languages, and even between publishing houses.
So it's always best to ask in a project thread.

My Methods

proofreading-and-formatting-method

Some-Notes-on-my-Journey

The Basics

Proofreading

Simple Proofreading Rules
1) ReWrap NO - Don't rewrap lines. Leave the ends of lines where they are in the image.
1.a) except: put together words that are broken across lines.
2) 1 Blank Line before each paragraph and
2.a) Indent NO at paragraph start.
2.b) 1 Blank Line MAX in Proofreading
3) Remove extra spaces around punctuation mistakenly inserted by the OCR software.
4) Correct scan spelling NO.
5) When in doubt, make it look like the original and use [** Notes for the next proofreader or PM would go here] to flag the spot.
6) WordCheck catches some errors, see: wordcheck_notes

Formatting

Thank you for asking about block quotations on page Siberian Fiasco 066.png 066.png in The Siberian Fiasco.

No, block quote tags /##/ are not used when there is no difference between the quoted text and the regular text.

We need to see a different font, or font size, or wider margins on the left and/or right, more white space above the first paragraph in the quote, after the last paragraph in the quote, et al. To quote the guidelines, "/# #/ "rewrap" markup indicates text that is printed differently" so we need to be able to see a difference.

While the styles recommended in the Chicago Manual of Style, may have been, and still are, used by many publishing houses, not all do, and unless we have access to an edition in or around the years in which the book was published we do not know what the recommendation might have been at the time.

So, look for a difference and if you see none, treat as regular text. It is fine to peek a few pages ahead to check whether there is more space after the last paragraph within the same block. (jjz

Chemistry For Beginners, Structural Chemical Formula
A==C==^{B}_{B} [** not exactly sure how to format P1][**agreed! Asked in forum. P2] Forum Discussion in project Chemistry For Beginners

Note: Author states this is a "structural or constitutional formula". Presumably this means that A has 2 bonds, C has 4 bonds and each of the 2 B's have 1 bond each. So, something like:

   /-H
O=C
   \-H
Formaldehyde (H2CO)
F1, F2 <TBD>
Chemistry For Beginners, Structural Chemical Formula
A = C = B/B
There is, however, another way of writing a formula,
 which is more expressive, thus: A = C = B/B
This is known as a <i>structural</i> or <i>constitutional</i>
 formula...

What is it? List/Table/Paragraph? Paragraph.

On "The history of the great northern railway, 1845-1895" by Grinling, Charles H. 035.png F1

1. A main line from London to York 186 miles.
2. A "loop" line from Peterborough viâ Boston and
Lincoln to Bawtry 86 "
3. A branch line from Bawtry to Sheffield 20-3/4 "
4. A branch from Doncaster to Wakefield 20-1/4 "
5. Minor branches to Bedford, Stamford and "spurs," ... [/code]

Should this be a:

  • Table with a nowrap
  • List with a nowrap
  • Block Quote

And if any of these, where would one end item 5?

  • Or, just Blank-line separated paragraphs?
  • Or, something else?

My guess would be either Table or Paragraphs. But, F1 did a Block Quote around 1 through 4.

Good question, that is an odd one.
* I think Items 1-4 go in no wrap markup because of the column for the numbers.
I would put:
* a blank line between each item
* Let Item 5 be on it's own outside of the no-wrap.

F1, F2 What is it? List/Table/Paragraph? List.
