A [**proofreader's note] (also called [**proofer's note], or just [**note]) is a way of pointing out something in the proofed text that will likely need further attention, usually from the PPer, but occasionally from proofreaders in later rounds.
Any [**notes] you leave in page text should always be enclosed in brackets and start with two asterisks so the PPer can find them easily with a search string. Apart from that, your notes can take any form you want. A convention, but not requirement, that has developed over time, is that a lot of proofers put the round number in their notes if the note came in later than round P1.
An example of a [**proofer's note] left regarding a possible printer's error may look something like:
