Talk:Missing pages
Pivoting the table?
Question: Looking at Frank's author-ordered list, can anybody suggest a way we could organize this page by author/title (book, in other words)? Might that be more helpful in promoting this content? Vaguery 11:24, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
- I see no reason why not. Maybe something like:
- Agee, Alva
- Title: Right use of lime in soil improvement
- Publishing Info: New York: Orange Judd Co. 1919.
- Needed: Higher resolution scans of illustrations.
- Date Added: May 23 2006
- Agee, Alva
- Caw 11:32, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
- I've just asked Frank to swing by and have a look. Vaguery 13:37, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
- I am swinging around ;) . I am actually trying to see if it would be possible to generate sortable table in a wiki; which for this purpose would probably be the most convenient. All I've found so far needs Java extansions and requires complicated editing--I think we don't want to go there.
- Vaguery suggested using this wiki page as general page where PG users could be refered to. For this ideally this page needs two output formats. One for internal DP use, which includes instructions for adding, removing and claiming missing pages projects and has links to phpBB PM's, and one external that gives just a list of projects with missing pages. --Fvandrog 13:50, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
(too many indents, OK if I continue the conversation over to the left?)
I'm not saying this is the solution you want. Just piping in to say something similar I've seen so maybe you smart guys can figure out a really good way to do it.
If each of the entries were articles, they could have multiple categories. Something like
Title The Sherwood Foresters in the Great War
Author Weetman W.C.C
Pub. Info Thos. Forman & Sons 1920.
Need The fold out map 'General Map of the Western Front' at the back of the book.

Note that the "title" category dropped the word "the" for the display in the category.--Papeters 14:14, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
- I think we may be able to cook something up, or at least the smart guys can (not me), maybe without too many more Categories entering into it. I can see we could do it that way, but extrapolated over the entire wiki, one is reminded of Borges, eventually. :) Vaguery 14:22, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
I'm wondering if it's possible to reorganize along something like:
- ===Author lastname, firstname===
- Title, edition, publisher, date
- Needs
- ====DP Info====
- Project manager, Project ID, etc.
Then maybe having a stripped version for printing/public consumption? Possibly even use <noinclude> markup, and have a page just for carrying to the library?
Just throwing this out there. Nearly all of my missing pages are self-inflicted ;) Logista 14:03, 26 May 2006 (PDT)
Frank's Big Break
fvandrog's edit 28 minutes ago is (pretty much) a revert to mikeyc21's second version, from about 3 days ago (see a diff of the two versions), which thus undoes the dozen intervening revisions. Was this intentional? I don't think it's an improvement. Jmdyck 16:11, 22 May 2006 (PDT)
- Please do not undo the work of so many of your colleagues, Frank.
- I have made a copy of the page as it stands now, in Missing_pages/Old_version, and am reverting the state to the version all those people worked to improve. Please feel free to duplicate old versions if you want to fork in future, moving it to a new wiki article like I have done, rather than undoing others' work. Vaguery 16:13, 22 May 2006 (PDT)
- Can we revert it to what was the current version before Frank's reversion? It's making my fingers itch to see a project listed under my name that I know has been fixed. I believe others had made changes, too. Greentea 16:18, 22 May 2006 (PDT)
- Fixed. At least in terms of files. Vaguery 16:22, 22 May 2006 (PDT)
- Oops, messed up that yesterday roaming around, and actually trying to fix a unclosed underline tag... sorry for the mess, and thanks for fixing up Vaguery!!
Page title
Would this article be better titled something like "Help Find Missing Pages"? (I'm bad at naming things, so would appreciate someone who's good at it doing the job for real.) Just "Missing Pages" applies to a lot of different things in my mind. --Papeters 12:49, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
- Good idea!
Template
I've created a template which should allow people to have consistent layouts for the missing pages posts. It uses parameters so it is very easy to fill in the first time it is used. Given MediaWiki's template handling code it would need to use the subst functionality so that after the first use it would just be a conventional table. For example:

will produce:
Title: Marion and Augusta |
Author: Emma Leslie |
Pub. Info.: S.W. Partridge & Co. 1884 |
Need: Pages 15 and 16 |

Hopefully this should make the page more consistent and readable. Davidp newton 04:50, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
- It seems a little complex for something that we want to be very easily editable. Also, why subst the template? The wikitext seems easier to read when the template is invoked in the usual manner... Mike (talk) 08:57, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
- The reason for the subst is that, as far as I can remember, if you have multiple versions of the same template on the same page then the variables conflict with each other. I'll try it out in this reply to see if I am correct.

Well apparently I was wrong. I was getting the fact that using the same variable twice in the same usage of the template messes things up. It's good that things don't need to be substed and makes using the template a good deal easier. Hopefully this removes the worries about complexity. Davidp newton 14:53, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
Various Notes
I just moved everything that I had listed under my name to Donovan's list. The diff looks unusual (probably because of the way that I edited it), but all the entries are still there. Greentea 12:50, 25 June 2006 (PDT)
