Nienke van Hichtum (1860-1939, biography), Der wier ris in ald wyfke: in ald teltsje, [1908].
- Frisian folk tale on an old woman who manages to get an unwilling pig in its cage. This traditional tale was retold in 1908 by Nienke van Hichtum (Nynke fan Hichtum) and published in both a Dutch and Frisian version, with attractive colored and black and white illustrations by Tjeerd Bottema. This book has been reprinted many times. See my distributed translation experiment.

- This monumental work on the Kula system of the Trobriand Islanders was a milestone in the development of modern Anthropology. Also, the institution of the Kula can be considered a predecessor to the work we are doing for Project Gutenberg.
William Marshall, Bilder-Atlas zur Zoologie der Vögel. [German].
Multatuli, Max Havelaar, Minden, 1901. [German].
- The Max Havelaar is one of the most significant books in Dutch literature and its colonial history. Multatuli (Eduard Douwes Dekker) a former official in the Dutch East Indies government exposed the way the Dutch government abused the local population for profit. The book, and its author, were controversial from the start.

Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), Farthest North: Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship 'Fram' 1893-1896.
- A detailed and richly illustrated 2-volume account of Fridtjof Nansen's attempt to reach the North Pole, including his relation of how he survived the dark winter on Frans Jozef Land, by shooting ice bears that entered his igloo, and then eating them. Nansen later became a Norwegian diplomat, who helped to save the live of millions of people, and got the 1922 Nobel peace price for his efforts. Vol. I DP, Vol. II DP.

- An encyclopedic 4-volume set. Gives an extensive introduction with a general overview, followed by three alphabetic volumes on the various tribes, castes, sub-castes and clans that can be found in the former Central Provinces of India. Currently the area is part of the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

- An encyclopedic 7-volume set on the various tribes, castes, sub-castes, and sects of Southern India, mainly covering the current states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. After a short introduction, it treats the subjects in alphabet order. I have all 7 volumes, and will be scanning these one-by-one in the coming months.
