About me

Who Am I?

Although my screen name has caused some confusion, my first name is David. Not knowing what to expect here when I first logged in, I chose the very uncreative option of First Initial, Middle Initial, Last Name.

Here are links to my forum profile, and my website.

I'm a professional classical singer, and I also teach voice at the University of Virginia. I recently relocated from California, where I taught voice and various music courses at UC Davis. In the process of the move, I took a fairly big vacation from DP, but am slowly inching my way back into the DP waters. It's been an adventure getting used to the new way of doing things, so please forgive me if I mistakenly formatted something in P1!

What I do at DP

I am, ostensibly, the leader of the Music Team. (By virtue of having formed it.) I could be doing much more to earn the title... In fact, I will try to do so. Here is an experimental MusicXML test project.

My principal joy in DP has been in content provision. I PM virtually all the projects I scan. I proof enough to keep my eyeballs limber, but not as my main activity. I do PP and even PPVed one project, but more out of a sense of duty than enjoyment. I'm enjoying the new wiki, though I won't claim any proficiency.

Books to be cleared and scanned

I have a huge stack of books to scan from my own collection. I also now have access to several University library collections, so I should have access to some very worthwhile books to add. However, I'm at the moment tempted to clear the stacks of my own books first.

I'm always torn about what to scan and process next. I love so many different kinds of books, and I have so many different arguments for what to scan next. So, here's a list of some of the books I've got stacked next to the scanner. If anyone has a particular interest in any of these books, let me know and I'll fast track it.

I'm going to be spending several months in France next year, so I will be spending the summer trying to turn my halting French into something more fluent. Some of the books below are likely to be fast tracked for that reason... I'll also probably do the children's books soon, since I can knock them out quickly.

French Books

  • Charles Alfred Downer, A First Course in French, ©1922
  • Paul Bercy, Simples Notions de Français, ©1894 (French for little children, profusely illustrated, of course)
  • Jessie F. Barnes, Histoires et Jeux, ©1922 (French for older children, with illustrations and sheet music)
  • C. A. Chardenal, First French Course, ©1886 [This is not a priority, as someone has already cleared "Complete French Course".]

Singing Books

  • Yvette Guilbert, How to Sing a Song, ©1918
  • Max Heinrich, Correct Principles of Classical Singing, ©1910
  • Lilli Lehmann, How to Sing (Revised), ©1914 (1902 edition is in my PP queue)
  • William Shakespeare, The Art of Singing, ©1910 (Yes that is really his name...)
  • Crystal Waters, Song, The Substance of Vocal Study, ©1930 (This would be a rule 6 clearance)

Other Music Books

  • George P. Upton, The Standard Cantatas, ©1887

Children's Books

  • Charlotte B. Herr, How Freckle Frog Made Herself Pretty, ©1913 (Very short, Color illustrations)
  • Punky Dunk and The Mouse, ©1912 (Very short, Color illustrations)
  • Punky Dunk and The Goldfish, ©1912 (Very short, Color illustrations)
  • Pansy, Sunshine Factory, ©1878 (Very Victorian.)

General

  • Hon. J. T. Headley, The Life and Travels of General Grant, ©1879 (profusely illustrated)
  • J. L. Nichols, Nichols' Business Guide; or Safe Methods of Business, (20th Century--Southern edition), ©1904
  • Fritz Schriber, The Complete Carriage and Wagon Painter, ©1910 (apparently quite rare)
  • Sarah Grand, Babs The Impossible, pub. 1901
  • J. Wm. Jones, School History of The United States, ©1898
  • Susan Pendleton Lee, New School History of The United States, ©1900
  • Myrtle Reed, Threads of Grey and Gold, ©1913 (Nice color illustrations)

Grace Harlowe Series by Jessie Graham Flower (AKA Josephine Chase)

My grandmother discovered this series in her youth, and collected most of the books in the series. (I'm missing some of the "Overland" series.) For the record, though several of the later books were © after 1922, it appears they were never renewed, and may qualify for a Rule 6 Clearance.

Sigal has agreed to OCR and prep all the books in the series that I put through, and marym has agreed to PP them. She and I are also going to team up to add illustrations to the ones that have been posted as plain-text only, though I'm missing one of them in my collection. There are also currently three books in the series which aren't claimed by anyone. (I don't have them, either.) If you have access to any of the books marked with an asterisk, please help us complete the series!
