Forum Tips

Forum posting
- Usually the Forum software strips extra spaces from your posts. To include meaningful spaces in, say, a sample from a page you are proofing, with a discussion of the indenting, use the "Code" tags rather than the "Quote" tags, as they alone preserve the spaces as you've typed them. The Code button, which is in the middle just below the subject line on the post-composing page, will insert the tags.
- You can format a URL (Universal Resource Locator) tag to display a summary name instead of the full URL by placing the URL inside the opening tag, after an =. The label is placed between the tags.
Example:
See the [url=http://www.pgdp.net/c/faq/document.php]Formatting Guidelines[/url]
That will appear in your post as: See the Formatting Guidelines.
- An easy way to point a URL tag to a particular previous post in the Forum:
Hover your cursor over the tiny "piece of paper" icon next to "Posted" in the upper left corner, and right-select "Copy Link Location" or "Copy shortcut". That copies the full URL of that post to your clipboard, from which it can be pasted into url tags in your new post.
- You can also highlight some of the text using a URL like this:
http://www.pgdp.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=14140&highlight=meaningful+spaces+URL#14140
- You can reference the contents of a previous post in two ways. Either use the "Quote" button in the upper-right of the post you want to reference, or copy & paste contents into a regular reply.
The "Quote" button wraps the entire post with:
[quote="DPWiki"] ... [/quote]
That puts the phrase "DPWiki wrote" ahead of the quoted text.
If you find yourself already in the "Post a reply" window and copying / pasting, you can use the "Quote" button in the "Edit post" window (up with bold, italic, etc.). If you add the
="DPWiki"
after the first "quote" and achieve the same result.
[quote="DPWiki wishes she"]Or you could add any text in there if you want to get fancy.[/quote]
