Jeroen, logista and I have something we think should be contributed, but we need to formalize it more before stepping in and trying to integrate anything. Essentially what would help promote, expand and stabilize DP the most would be to reframe it as a Web Service client/server system. One that allows independent special-purpose client applications, or web interfaces (like its own), to manage user experience independently, check pages out, provide arbitrary tools to make modifications and conduct checks, and then return the text (under authentication and authorization) to the database.

Such a fundamental change would entail designing a full-featured API, and client-server protocols. But those same API calls could be used both in the DP 2.0 website, and external client applications. This would allow not only offline reading, but also the use of script-based platform-specific tool sets within the process, not just in PPing.

We're sketching still, but it would be useful to coordinate to some extent.

--Vaguery, I think we are much on one line in this thought, as are a few other people I've met, who would love to use all kinds of tools to improve texts. The ideas, I think are emerging, but the effort required to do realize them will be quite big. I think we should make it in a kind of research project for a Ph.D. thesis, or subject of one of these large programming contests, such as organized by Google. I've been setting up this sketch in the Wiki, just that people can think about it, and find like-minded people. Edits and more ideas are welcome.--Jeroen.

Good thoughts. Big project. I'd like to be involved in realizing it; I'll watch this page. JesseW 23:55, 3 January 2007 (PST)

Candidate for Google Summer of Code 2007

I am investigating whether this project could be a candidate for the Google Summer of Code, 2007. Jeroen Hellingman 00:07, 4 January 2007 (PST)
