At the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century, the British authorities in India (At that time still including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma, and intruding into Nepal and Bhutan) produced a series of volumes on the castes and tribes of various regions in India. These books treat each group in great detail, and thus constitute a wealth of information. Some of this is hopelessly outdated, and no longer acceptable (such as discussions on criminal tribes), but still it will be very valuable to have this material available on line, if only as an historical resource.

- The Archaeological Survey of India series (Extremely expensive huge books with collotypes, very attractive, and even more important)
