Lyrics copied from P3 and perl-formatted --QMacrocarpa 16:39, 1 June 2007 (PDT):

"SOUL of Jesus, make me whole,"
"Meek and contrite make my soul;"
"Thou most stainless Soul Divine,"
"Cleanse this sordid soul of mine,"
"Hallow this my contrite heart,"
"Purify my every part;"
"Soul of Jesus, hallow me,"
" Miserere Domine."
""
"Save me, Body of my Lord,"
"Save a sinner, vile, abhorred;"
"Sacred Body, wan and worn,"
"Bruised and mangled, scourged and torn,"
"Piercèd hands, and feet, and side,"
"Rent, insulted, crucified:"
"Save me--to the Cross I flee,"
" Miserere Domine."
""
"Blood of Jesus, stream of life,"
"Sacred stream with blessings rife,"
"From thy broken Body shed"
"On the Cross, that altar dread;"
"Given to be our drink Divine,"
"Fill my heart and make it thine;"
"Blood of Christ, my succour be,"
" Miserere Domine."
""
"Holy Water, stream that poured"
"From thy riven side, O Lord,"
"Wash thou me without, within,"
"Cleanse me from the taint of sin,"
"Till my soul is clean and white,"
"Bathed, and purified, and bright"
"As a ransomed soul should be,"
" Miserere Domine."
""
"Jesu, by the wondrous power"
"Of thine awful Passion hour,"
"By the unimagined woe"
"Mortal man may never know;"
"By the curse upon thee laid,"
"By the ransom thou hast paid,"
"By thy Passion comfort me,"
" Miserere Domine."
""
"Jesu, by thy bitter Death."
"By thy last expiring breath,"
"Give me the eternal life,"
"Purchased by that mortal strife;"
"Thou didst suffer death that I"
"Might not die eternally;"
"By thy dying quicken me,"
" Miserere Domine."
""
"Miserere; let me be"
"Never parted, Lord, from thee;"
"Guard me from my ruthless foe,"
"Save me from eternal woe;"
"When the hour of death is near,"
"And my spirit faints for fear,"
"Call me with thy voice of love,"
"Place me near to thee above."
"With thine Angel host to raise"
"An undying song of praise,"
" Miserere Domine."

Lily3 Notes

Copy the Lilypond source to your computer and compile it to create MIDIs and a PDF to check. Leave notes here, or edit the code in Lily2 and leave notes describing the changes. The L3 who declares the hymn "cleared" should upload the correctly-named files to the file repository. This ensures that what is checked and cleared is exactly what is uploaded.

  • I am soundless again, so haven't been able to check the midi. I've adapted Jack's straddle and breathmark macros for this one - thanks - although I had to put the breathmark commands inline, as in my code environment, for some reason, the macro proper produced duplicate breathing signs - Oh what fun I had, but I never got to the bottom of it... Would love to hear if you've got any ideas.
  • This hymn had pairs of beamed quavers in different voices which shared the same stems and beams; mentioning it here in case anyone else gets some. Regards, camilla.

  • Easy things first: I think there should be a little extra space (one or two?) between the tempo marking and To be sung in unison. in the header.
  • 3rd system, 1st bar, tenor line, 3rd note should be just f. The 'g' is a smudge on the page. I'm pretty certain--someone with a hard copy should double check!
  • The lyrics for the last four lines are ending up below the bass staff instead of between the treble and bass.
  • 2nd system of last four lines part, 3rd bar treble line 3rd note column is missing an f (with the a and c).
  • Now for the hard part: The log file lists four pages of "warning: ignoring too many clashing note columns" which we need to fix. On most of the "unison" hymns the strict SATB parts don't work out right. If the note appears on the treble staff and the stem goes up, it is "soprano" for our purposes. If the note is treble and the stem goes down, it is "alto". If there is no note for a particular part, it gets coded as space. So for the first measure of this piece I'd code the notes as:
 soprano a4 d d c
 alto <f d>4 <a f> <a f> <a f>
 tenor s1
 bass d2~ d8[ e] f4
  • I have no good suggestion for the breath mark problem since I avoid coding hymns with breath marks.

  • On the 3rd system 1st bar tenor line: surprisingly, my 1933 edition also shows an "f" and a "g" sharing the same stem! I'll ask Q to check her hard copy of the 1906 edition.
  • On breathmarks, Camilla, I sent you a PM on how to fix them. The breathmark macro uses the rehearsal mark feature, and the mark engraver needs to be removed from the score context and inserted into the staff context in the layout block.

QMacrocarpa 20:25, 12 July 2007 (PDT)

  • More on the 3rd system 1st bar tenor line: Yes, the 1906 ed. has f+g there in the tenor as well. And then while they have us off-balance, they appear to throw in an extra beat in the bass line in the same measure-- unless the downward stem on last 1/4-note of the measure is a typo?

styg 20:42, 12 July 2007 (PDT)

  • Thanks for checking. That is an oddly-shaped note head!
  • As for the extra note.... It isn't really SATB and the note fits into a nice chord so it probably belongs. I bet the stem really should go up on it or else the bass half-note from the 3rd beat should be two quarters tied together.

camilla 23:57, 12 July 2007 (PDT)

  • Hi everybody! So glad we can keep the wonky g! I agree he belongs. Also think the 'extra' note is just a bit of creative typesetting and really part of a chord in the 'tenor'. Cost of keeping Wonky is a clashing notecolumn warning. Still have a couple of these remaining after re-coding - have tried playing around with these, distributing the notes differently among the voices, and haven't given up yet, but think you'd better have version 2 to have a look at in the meantime. Regards to all.

Jkenny 07:30, 13 July 2007 (PDT)

  • By commenting out bits of code at a time, I was able to isolate the code which causes the compiler warnings.
  • I've found fixes for most of them.
  • There are two clashing note column warnings, and I've fixed them.
    • The first is in 1st system 2nd bar, alto where the black notes straddle the soprano. Warning is caused by this code: \nudgeleft g4 f4
      • This is because the g4 clashes with the downstem d2 in soprano.
      • Warning disappears when replaced with this code: \voiceFour g4 \voiceTwo f4
      • g4 is set to voiceFour which is offset to the left, so no clash. Also, \nudgeleft is not needed anymore.
    • Second warning is in 3rd system tenor 1st bar where the wonky bits are. Warning is caused by the code: << f4 \\ \stemUp \once \override NoteHead #'X-offset = #1.3 g4 >> << \stemDown e4 \\ \stemUp g4 >>
      • Warning dissappears when replaced with this code: <f g>4 << { g4 } \new Voice = "alt" { \voiceFour e4 } >>
  • There are however two "programming error: adding reverse spring, setting to unit". Remember we see a lot of this in our plainsong pieces. Apparently quite harmless.
    • The first is in 1st system 2nd bar soprano, the 2 white notes. The error is caused by this code: << \stemDown d,2 \\ \stemUp a'2 >>
      • Error disappears when this is replaced by this code: << { a2 } \new Voice = "low" { \voiceTwo d,2} >>
    • The second is in 3rd system 2nd bar bass, caused by this code: a4. g8
      • This is really puzzling as these notes are perfectly legitimate and straight-forward, nothing fancy. So why should there be an error? My guess is that Lilypond in wanting to set the quaver a little to the right of the main notecolumn finds it is out of space, so has to pull the quaver leftwards, perhaps that is what a "reverse spring" means?
      • Can't find a fix for this. But the output seems correct. So perhaps if we can't fix this, we should just leave it be and move on?
  • I've pasted these changes into the L2 code above.

styg 08:14, 13 July 2007 (PDT)

  • Very willing to ignore the "reverse spring" message since it doesn't seem to cause a problem.
  • I missed one. Verse 7, line 1 Miserere needs to be in italics.
  • Everything else looks good!

Jkenny 09:40, 13 July 2007 (PDT)

  • Fixed it on Camilla's behalf - not her timezone yet.
