Lily3

We are trying out a new workflow where L3 grabs the code, compiles and checks. After clearance, L3 will name the files and upload to repository. This ensures that what is checked and cleared is exactly what is uploaded.

Notes

Notes from stygiania 14:06, 14 May 2007 (PDT)

  • There is a possible typo in the original in the first bar of the second system--the soprano part has an eighth note g against the tenor eighth note a which sounds terrible. I suspect both should be singing an a--does someone have another source for this hymn to check?
  • I have added a space to the beginning of the second line of the first verse so the single quote mark doesn't get lost in the serif of the drop-cap H.

Comments by QMacrocarpa 20:57, 14 May 2007 (PDT):

  • I guess we're to assume slurs on the 1/8-notes-- they certainly aren't there in original.
  • The spot that bothers you doesn't sound bad to me. The only place I found it online also has A+G, but I couldn't find a source, so it may be from the same as ours: Dent Dale
  • I think the hymn meters usually have a space after periods in the middle, like this: (7 7. 7 7.) This one doesn't seem to (7 7.7 7), but mostly they do-- typo?
  • Some of the dotted shared notes in the original are pretty whacky! The 2nd and 3rd measures in the 2nd system (upper staff) took a bit of staring (especially considering the 3rd measure in the 1st system, upper staff), but your version is perfectly faithful to the original, and I don't know how I'd do it differently to make it hurt my brain less, so let's go with it!

Note from stygiania 22:00, 14 May 2007 (PDT)

  • The Metrical Index looks like (7 7. 7 7.) so I've changed it and consider this to be a typo on 069.png.
  • Maybe the audio on my system just makes that a/g thing stand out to me. :-)
  • I had to kludge that shared Eb in the 2nd system 2nd bar. There was a great temptation to double the dot in the next bar to match the others where the notes are the same value to accentuate the one case where the shared note-head is for notes of differing values, but stayed with matching the original.
  • v2 code posted above.

Comments by Jkenny 22:16, 14 May 2007 (PDT)

  • The 1933 edition shows A+G also. Also no slurs.
  • No space after period in middle of hymn meter: exactly the same in 1933 edition. But quite sure it is a typo.
  • The kludge you did with the shared Eb is correct since you have to force two notes of different duration together. Also explains why there's only one dot. Two dots means both have the same dotted duration. Which means measure 3 is a typo but I agree, let's just match the original. But 1st system 3rd measure shows a strange one where the shared note has 2 dots which are spaced further apart!
  • If we really want to reproduce that gap between the dots in the shared note in the first system 3rd measure, we'll need another chunk of code like this:
 augdotsgap = {
 \once \override Voice.Dots #'stencil = #ly:text-interface::print
 \once \override Voice.Dots #'text = \markup {  \hspace #0 \raise #1
                                                \line { \translate #(cons -0.2 0)
                                                \override #'(baseline-skip . 2 )
                                                   \column {
                                                     \musicglyph #"dots.dot"
                                                     \musicglyph #"dots.dot" } } }
 }

</code>

Then place \augdotsgap where \augdots was in the 3rd measure of the alto. This macro is the same as augdots except that the baseline-skip property has been increased from 1 to 2. base-line skip controls the space between lines in a column.

- but ooh, ick, let's not. Unattractive and I doubt done on purpose. Also, not convinced meas. 3 3rd system is typo-- the doubled dots I recall seeing have all been where shared note is on a line of staff. Has anyone seen an instance of doubled dots with note on a SPACE of the staff as here? Anyway, I'd keep the dotted notes as you have them. --QMacrocarpa
- I did some looking around and I think you've hit the answer, Q. Doubled dots are for shared notes on lines and those on spaces only get a single. But I suppose we'll eventually find an exception.

So are any changes needed on this one? --stygiania 08:29, 15 May 2007 (PDT)

- I don't think any changes are needed. I agree that we leave dots the way you have done it.

Cleared and files uploaded. --QMacrocarpa 14:45, 15 May 2007 (PDT)
