Upside down semicolon?
Are we sure this isn't actually a question mark?
I only ask because I just did a bunch of blackletter OCR and the question marks in that looked just like this so-called semicolon! rassilon 08:39, 8 July 2006 (PDT)
- I thought that too for a while, but just yesterday I saw some upside-down semicolons and question marks on this page, and I realized that they really are different. In blackletter (and some other old projects) the question marks do look like the EETS symbol, but in EETS they're different. Acunning40 09:18, 8 July 2006 (PDT)
- Well, I just found out what it's called! It's a punctus elevatus, and indicates a brief pause (shorter than a semicolon but longer than a mere point). Check out this page from Western Michigan U., on Reading Old English manuscripts! rassilon 10:48, 8 July 2006 (PDT)
