Early English Text Society
Introduction
- The Early English Text Society was founded in 1864 by Frederick James Furnivall, with the help of Richard Morris, Walter Skeat, and others, to bring the mass of unprinted Early English literature within the reach of students and to provide sound texts from which the New English Dictionary (subsequently the Oxford English Dictionary) could quote. It has continued to publish medieval English texts ever since, currently producing one or two titles a year in the Original Series and on occasion additional titles in its Supplementary Series. Most of the past publications are kept in print, though in some cases older editions have been replaced by newer ones.
From the Early English Text Society website at http://www.eets.org.uk/
The original series reached 159, and the extra series reached 117 before 1923. That does, however, include new editions of the same book. In any case, this series is a wealth of Old and Middle English works available for Project Gutenberg.
Guidelines
The match the scan principle goes double for EETS books. Unless the Project Comments say otherwise, assume that all typographic decisions were intentional and that all information should be preserved. This applies even when the editors themselves weren't sure whether an unusual letterform was simply a decorative variant.
Proofing
Keep page headers, except the page numbers. Headers usually change from page to page and include information that does not appear elsewhere. Unless the Project Comments say otherwise, this applies only to the body text; you do not need to preserve recurring headers like "Introduction" or "Index".
There are many special characters in EETS works. When possible, use the standard extended characters. Use these notations for the others. Thorn þ and eth ð are included here as reminders; they can be proofed as printed.

Formatting
There are many italics in words, usually showing expanded abbreviations. Be sure to mark them. Unless the Project Comments say otherwise, mark all italics as actually printed. Do not try to second-guess the editor.
Put sidenotes before the first line they appear on, without adding blank lines.
Mark the headers as sidenotes. If headers were deleted by proofers, you may need to restore them.
Large initial capitals (drop caps) often represent decorative initials in the original text. So unless the Project Comments say otherwise, mark them as <f>. Empty squares with a single letter in the middle mean that the manuscript left room for a decorative capital, but it was never filled in. Check Project Comments for ways to mark these.
Books published before 1923
Note that the dates are EETS planned publication dates, but the later publications might actually have been published after this date. So not all of these books were published before 1923.
Magic Tricks for Project Managers
As soon as you've created the project, you can set up links. Paste in these two lines, including the boldface tags ''' at each end. Be sure to delete any line breaks and leading blank spaces so the final text doesn't show up in a box like these examples.
'''[[projectpage:projectID4956fbd858241|Current state:]] <projectinfo id="projectID4956fbd858241">%state%</projectinfo>'''
Replace both "projectID..." with your actual project ID. The first one creates a link to the Project Page, hidden behind the words "Current state". The second one is dp-wiki magic that automatically shows what state the project is in. The reader will see this: Current state: Completed and Posted to Project Gutenberg
Once you've done this, you do not need to touch your text again until the project has been posted to PG ("Current state" says "Posted to PG"). When that happens, you will want to change the package to
[[etext:13484]]
replacing "13484" with the right e-text number, which you can get from the Project Page. The reader will see etext:13484 with a link to the PG page.
