Abbreviations and numerals
When the abbreviations "b.c.", "a.d.", "a.m.", and "p.m." are in small caps, we mark them that way, always in all uppercase. We do not include the year or time in the markups: they are like the guidelines' example of abbreviated British currency symbols: "It cost 9<i>l.</i> 4<i>s.</i> 1<i>d.</i>", and not like the example of an italicized date in the heading of a letter: "<i>Enacted 4 July, 1776</i>".
