An illustration.

An illustration may be on a page of its own, or may share a page with text. If it has a caption and/or other associated text, highlight all of that and click the [Illustration] button (always use the buttons; it's too easy to make mistakes if you type the tags yourself) to place the selection inside the generated brackets, after the colon and space. Format the caption and any text as though they were not in an illustration.

Illustrations, like sidenotes and footnotes, must be placed "out-of-line;" that is, between paragraphs. So, if there's also regular text on the page, move the [Illustration] tag and its information between paragraphs, preceded and followed by a blank line. Paragraph breaks may occur at the top or bottom of a page; if at the very bottom, omit the trailing blank line. If there are no paragraph breaks, move the tag and its content to the very top of the page, with an asterisk to its left and a blank line below it. If there are several illustrations on the page, each one needs the asterisk and the trailing blank line.

Before reviewing these examples, make sure you are familiar with the Illustrations section of the Formatting Guidelines.
