Using JWChat to Jabber

From DPWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The browser interface isn't always very steady, but it'll give you an idea of what Jabber's all about, so you can decide if you want to try specialised software for it. (Note: most Jabber programs are surprisingly small!)

Here's how to get started:

  1. Open http://jwchat.org/ in a new browser window / tab.
  2. Change the server name from jwchat.org to jabber.org. (Or you can enter another server if you prefer.)
  3. Type a username below. Using your DP username is rather cool, but it will need to be a unique name (adding numbers or suchlike can help.)
  4. Make up a password.
  5. Tick the box to register a new account if you haven't registered on jabber before.
  6. Click login.
  7. A little window should pop up which is your Jabber centre page. Check your pop-up blocker isn't being over-enthusiastic if this doesn't appear.
  8. Click on the group of people at the bottom of that window, to open the groupchat dialogue.
    1. Change the nickname you want to sign into the room as, if you like - DP names make you easy to get to know - this can EASILY be changed in the room too.
    2. Room is pgdp
    3. Server is conference.jabber.org
    4. Click JOIN!!
    5. No password needed. This is a private but open room ... ie. it's not logged or visible in the general lists, but anyone who knows it exists can show up. And are welcome!
  9. Chat. Bookmark the chat if it's useful. Download Psi, Exodus, Gaim or the Trillian plugin if you find it useful / fun. Jabber prides itself on being small and friendly, and so do we!
