WWII Postmortem

There were three sets of these books, the Red Books and Green Books are listed here. The Blue Books (Trial of the Major War Criminals...) were done or are being done through DP-C.

lbh1948 discussed the authorship of these books with Al Haines. Al suggested "various". I have been changing back to the original authorship because "Various" does not author block in the proofing and formatting rounds. If I use "Various" I have to manually queue these books.

Red Books: Nazi Conspiracy and Aggression

  • Using “United States Office of Chief of Counsel for the Prosecution of Axis Criminality” as author for these books. “Various” does not author-block.
  • Library of Congress reference page for this series. (Link takes several minutes to load.)
  • Most of these projects appear to have been run with the TIA scan (not the TIA community text version).
  • TIA community text version. Claims to be 600 ppi, but is processed so may have been scanned at lower resolution and pushed by something like ScanTailor.

Red Books Illustration Review

Vol. I

  • I don't like the cover that was used. I would like to see it replaced with the LoC cover to match volumes 1 & 2.

Vol. IV

  • Verified that there are no photographs. The only things that qualify as illustrations are the title page and two ballots.
  • Title page has medallions/shields/insignia for three governmental agencies. Comparing different scans. I reviewed all copies of scans of the title page that I could find online (LoC (1), TIA (2), hathi (7, but only 2 with resolution greater than 300 ppi)). The cover page from the original scan set on TIA was the best, however the copy in the project had been processed. I replaced it with the unprocessed image.
  • Two illustrations that are typeset essentially inline with the body text. More resolution won't make a difference. (Unlike the title page, these images have not been processed, other than loose cropping.)
  • Replaced cover with image from the LoC scan. This is closer to the covers already on PG, and it doesn't have the junk on it that the cover in the original scan set in TIA has.
  • Illustration review complete for volume IV.

Vol. V

  • Verified that there are no photographs. The only thing that qualifies as an illustration is the title page.
  • Based on the file size of the title page, it had obviously been processed, although the nature of the processing was not immediately obvious. Based on the analysis of the title page for Volume IV, replaced current title page with the unprocessed (but cropped) title page from the original scan set in TIA.
  • Replaced cover with image from the LoC scan. This is closer to the covers already on PG, and it doesn't have the junk on it that the cover in the original scan set in TIA has.
  • Illustration review complete for Volume V.

Vol. VI

  • Verified that there are no photographs. The only thing that qualifies as an illustration is the title page.
  • Susan Skinner had inserted higher resolution images of the cover and title page during this project's stay in the hospital.
  • While the cover that Susan inserted was ok and much higher resolution, I replaced it with the LoC cover for consistency with the other volumes.
  • Illustration review is complete for this Volume VI.

Vol. VII

  • Susan Skinner already replaced cover and title page with higher resolution images.
  • I replaced cover with LoC cover for consistency with other volumes.
  • Illustration review complete for Volume VII.

Vol. VIII

  • Project notes ok.
  • I took a close look at the "illustrations" in this text, which are all charts and graphs. I was not amused by the quality of these so-called illustrations, so I went to the New York Public Library and looked at a physical copy of this book.
    • Regarding the illustrations on pp. 770-782 (774.png-786.png):
      • These are printed on glossy paper (like photographs), whereas the rest of the book is printed on normal book paper. Glossy paper is notoriously difficult to scan.
      • The edge and corner artifacts (usually darkness) are in the original.
      • The legibility of the originals is only marginally better than what appears in the project.
      • Given that any improvement would be minimal, I do not intend to replace these images.
    • Regarding the illustrations on 1096.png-1106.png:
      • These are located in a folder which is glued inside the back cover of the book. What I saw in the images from TIA and LoC indicate that this was done in the publishing process, not by NYPL.
      • These are printed on very thin drafting paper. The paper was so thin that I instinctively handled them very carefully to avoid tearing.
      • The decreased legibility of our images is due to their being printed on various sizes of paper, all of which are much larger than 8.5 x 11 or A.
      • Once again, I don't think that replacing these would provide a noticeable improvement.
  • Illustration review complete for Volume VIII.

Opinion and Judgment

  • There are no illustrations in this book.
  • Project notes ok.

Supplement A

  • I created project.
  • Footnote/endnote anchors were so small that I decided to insert them myself.
  • Illustration review not needed (because I created this project, I did not inherit it).

Supplement B

  • There are no illustrations in this book, other than a few graphs, however they are embedded in the text, not large or complex like the tables in volume 8.

  • Using author “International Military Tribunal”. “Various” does not author-block.

  • On TIA, most of these books use the spelling “Nuremberg” in their titles. “Nuernberg” is how it is spelled in the books.
