Full title: The Poems of Ossian in the Original Gaelic, with a Literal Translation into Latin

In 1760, James Macpherson claimed to have discovered ancient Gaelic poetry while travelling around the Scottish Highlands, and proceeded to publish his findings over the next several years. He claimed the composer was Ossian, a 3rd-century bard and son of the Irish mythological figure Fionn mac Cumhaill. The poems were incredibly popular throughout Europe and were translated into multiple languages, but academics were divided on the work's authenticity. It is now believed the poems were written by Macpherson himself, inspired by traditional Gaelic poetry he had collected.
