User:Branko/useful digital cameras as per December 2006
This is a list of digital cameras that could be used for PC-controlled scanning. The set is limited based on the following assumptions:
- must be PC-controllable
- at least 4MP
- for sale in stores in the Netherlands now
If your needs are not limited by these demands, your choice is of course much wider. Also, I have only checked my own regional market. It may that some models never were sold in the Netherlands, or that they are still for sale elsewhere.
As it is now, it would seem that Canon and Olympus have shied away from making consumer models PC-controllable.
(See this forum thread for a wider discussion on the use of PC-controlled digital cameras for scanning.)
Consumer models
(Meaning: less than 400 EUR)
Olympus
- C-765 Ultra Zoom (4 MP, ca. 300 EUR)
- C-750 (4 MP, ca. 450 EUR) the Olympus SDK page only mentions an "Ultra Zoom" version
- SP-700 (6.2 MP, ca. 300 EUR) this seems to be a relatively recent model (Xmas 2005)
- SP-500 Ultra Zoom (6 MP, ca. 350 EUR)
- SP-350 (8 MP, ca. 300 EUR)
Exceptions:
- FE-130 (5.1 MP, ca. 200 EUR) still for sale (and cheap), but none of the current software seems to support it.
- C-500 (5 MP, ca. 250 EUR) still for sale (and cheap), but none of the current software seems to support it.
Canon
Canon produces its own software to remote-control its digital cameras. Unfortunately, whether a given camera is supported by the software is not publicized by Canon. (Instead, Canon lists which cameras are supported by a certain SDK.) So instead I have used Breeze Systems list of supported Canon models for PC controlled cameras.
What gives Canon a leg up though is that its own software also runs on Macs.
- Canon Powershot S70 (7.1 MP, ca. 370 EUR)
- Canon Powershot S80 (8 MP, ca. 450 EUR)
- Canon Powershot S2 IS (5 MP, ca. 350 EUR)
- Canon Powershot S3 IS (6 MP, ca. 400 EUR)
- Canon Powershot A520 (4.2 MP, ca. 200 EUR)
- Canon Powershot A620 (7 MP, ca. 300 EUR)
- Canon Powershot A640 (10 MP, ca. 340 EUR)
- Canon Digital IXUS II (6 MP, ca. 260 euro)
- Canon Digital IXUS 500 (5 MP, ca. 400 EUR)
Professional models
(Meaning: 400 EUR or more)

- E-500 (8 MP)
- E-400 (10 MP)
- E-330 (7.5 MP)
- E-300 (8 MP)
- E-1 (5 MP)
