These are suggestions made in the Documentation forum from December 2005 through July 2008 (give or take a bit), but not changed in v2.0. The list will likely be useful to future guidelines editors, since there were plenty of good suggestions that didn't make it into v2.0 due to time constraints or other reasons.

Content changes

Suggested structural revisions

  • forumtopic:24143: shorter guidelines, with a separate document for examples
  • forumpost:267792: just have one document, and generate the two sets of guidelines from it
  • forumpost:270955: house the guidelines on the wiki (only admins allowed to make changes)

General

  • forumpost:220779: one document with different display options (only P, only F, both P & F)
  • forumpost:220845: numbering of sections
  • forumtopic:29233: examples wrap at narrow window widths -- maybe use nonbreaking hyphens or nowrap markup (that particular example has been dealt with; using nowrap markup in examples would cause worse problems than wrapping)
  • forumpost:465434: mention buttons in the interface
  • avoid saying, "don't worry about...." (PM received July 15)

Formatting

  • forumpost:220692: note at the top of the F guidelines that they're not the P guidelines
  • change the address of the F guidelines & redirect document.php to formatting_guidelines.php; find out if we can do this in a way that'll retain anchors in links so that people end up at the right section not at the top
  • forumpost:461286: mention that LaTeX projects are much different from regular formatting

The Primary Rule

  • this used to mention the long s; should it again? (or add the long s somewhere else)
  • forumpost:467041: change "author" to "printer" or "publisher" (more discussion on the following page)

Proofreading

  • put the mention of formatting in a separate paragraph?

Double Quotes

Proofreading

  • forumpost:461858: say not to remove any quotation marks except for the case of quote marks on each line
  • forumpost:463192: use ASCII " as the default for proofing lower quotes

Single Quotes

Proofreading

  • forumpost:461858: put some of the same info here as in the double quotes section, regarding quote marks other than plain ASCII '

Quote Marks on each line

Proofreading

  • forumtopic:29365: what to do at the top of a page (asterisk like an em-dash at the top of a page?)
  • in LOTE each paragraph might not always keep the " in a running quotation

End-of-sentence Periods

Proofreading

Punctuation

Proofreading

Extra spaces or tabs between Words

Dashes, Hyphens, and Minus Signs

Proofreading

  • forumtopic:22209: leave a space for an end-of-sentence dash that has a space in the original; see also forumpost:217637
  • forumtopic:20628: use single hyphen when the original shows one, for a single omitted/censored character
  • forumtopic:20226: em-dash used for range of number (where it's usually an en-dash); proof as 1 or 2 hyphens?
  • forumtopic:21155: add an example for end-of-page dash
  • forumpost:462277: more examples of various sorts (not done but one example adjusted slightly)
  • forumpost:463192: define en & em dashes based on usage not length
  • forumpost:463192: say more about the hyphenation exception rather than just pointing to the example
  • forumpost:466546: match the original for em dashes (apparently with respect to spacing though this isn't stated specifically)

End-of-line Hyphenation

Proofreading

End-of-page Hyphenation

Proofreading

  • forumtopic:19440: note that you don't have to check the previous page to see if there was a hyphen or dash

Period Pause "..." (Ellipsis)

Proofreading

  • forumpost:445221: proposed change in guidelines to match the number of dots & spacing of ellipses
  • forumpost:445765: match the number of dots, but always clothe ellipses on both sides (with the PPer to decide spacing & make it consistent)
  • forumtopic:21155: end-of-line ellipsis (can be inferred from the fact that ends of lines will be converted into spaces, which is now mentioned in the guidelines)
  • forumpost:468461: say to leave the ellipsis where it appears with respect to nearby punctuation
  • forumpost:471259: remove spaces between dots in LOTE (see also forumpost:424556)

Accented/Non-ASCII Characters

Proofreading

  • forumtopic:23989: yogh markup
  • forumpost:343014: guidelines for the ƒ character, which isn't in Latin-1 but appears in Dutch texts
  • forumpost:355242ff:
    • mention somewhere that the handling of ligatures is shown in the charts (not needed since a separate change took care of this)
    • maybe change the titles "Æ ligature" and "Œ ligature" to use "AE" and "OE" instead so that browser search will find "ae"? (ditto -- other changes took care of this)
    • maybe create a new section for ligatures
  • forumpost:423233:
    • state specifically that entities shouldn't be used
    • maybe remove mention of Character Map? (but warning added)
  • forumpost:463192: mention posting in the discussion if you find a symbol that isn't covered by the guidelines or PCs
  • forumpost:468461: mention that the ae ligature is available from a drop-down box in the interface

Characters with Diacritical marks

Proofreading

  • forumtopic:31403: various suggestions (more instructions, more examples, how to handle diacritics that aren't listed in the table)

Non-Latin Characters

Proofreading

  • clarify where to put the ** if you're unsure of your transliteration (from PM received 6/5)

Superscripts

  • forumpost:468461: why different rules for braces between superscripts & subscripts

Italics

Formatting

Bold Text

Formatting

  • "part of a phrase, title or abbreviation that is in bold type": probably remove or clarify "title", since it could be misunderstood to refer to a section heading or similar line, which shouldn't be marked as bold (the phrase is now gone, so it's irrelevant)

Spaced Out Text

Proofreading

  • forumpost:320005: add this section, saying to remove spaces between the letters (added spaced-out text under new preexisting formatting section)

Font Changes

Formatting

  • add examples showing the use of <f>

Line Breaks

Proofreading

Chapter Headers

Formatting

  • forumtopic:30027: match the original on the first words of a chapter, rather than converting to sentence case
  • forumpost:461585: specifically say not to mark all small caps (this would apply to section headings too) (no, but bolded "mixed case" to make that clearer)

Page Headers/Page Footers

Proofreading

  • forumpost:344134: mention removing blank line following page header (no longer needed given "Line Breaks" change above) see also forumpost:470475
  • mention the possibility of PM exceptions when the header changes on every page (suggested by PM, June 4)

Illustrations

Proofreading

  • say specifically not to move captions, similar to sidenotes wording (from PM received 6/5)
  • forumpost:463192: explicitly say not to add the blank page tag

Formatting

Footnotes/Endnotes

  • forumtopic:22632: proof & format symbolic footnotes with the symbols directly; use [+] for dagger and [++] for double dagger; see also forumtopic:27883
  • forumpost:461305: link to examples elsewhere that include footnotes (page headers/footers in P, chapter headings in F, sidenotes in both)
  • forumpost:461305: change the phrase "We don't keep this" to "We don't keep this horizontal line" (wording changed in another way, making this irrelevant)
  • forumpost:461858: say not to leave a space between the footnote anchor and the word/punctuation that it belongs with
  • forumpost:461858: say that the "no additional punctuation" refers to punctuation that might appear in the image
  • forumpost:462149: put the part about no other punctuation in the footnote anchor paragraph as well as the footnote text paragraph (see also forumpost:470475)

Proofreading

  • forumtopic:27883: change symbols to capital letters in the P rounds
  • forumpost:344985: mention leaving a space between footnote marker and footnote text
  • forumpost:376812:
    • mention not leaving a space between the footnote marker and regular text
    • add an example of letters as footnote markers (could just change the second example)
  • forumpost:462149: continued footnotes here not just under common problems

Formatting

Multiple Columns

  • forumtopic:18520: clarify what kind of text gets unwrapped (i.e., what's "ordinary text")

Proofreading

  • forumpost:410712: leave multiple columns as in the image during P*, or all through the rounds

Poetry/Epigrams

Proofreading

Formatting

  • forumpost:291748: clarify blank lines around /* */ markup
  • forumpost:463052: add in the phrase about closing markup on every page in this section (handled differently now--link to section about /##/ and /**/)
  • forumpost:466155: specify whether to format a new poem as a chapter, section, or whatever

Letters/Correspondence

Formatting

  • forumpost:214593: possibly omit the year from the markup, since the typesetter clearly had italicized numbers available for the "10"
  • move the "Dear Sir" line needs to be outside the /* */ markup?
  • does /**/ markup go around heading/footer lines of a letter even if left aligned in the image? (email received 6/9)

Right-aligned text

Formatting

  • forumpost:461544: say not to add indentation, just the markup (gave a link to the correspondence section where there are further instructions and examples, which should take care of this)

Table of Contents

Proofreading

  • forumpost:468461: change the instruction from "ignore" leaders to say to leave them as OCRed

Indexes

Proofreading

  • forumpost:461305: add the phrase, "Just as with tables" (regarding the lack of alignment)

Plays: Actor Names/Stage Directions

  • forumpost:461858: lack of clarity regarding stage directions printed on their own lines
  • forumpost:468461: the section covers other things besides actor names & stage directions; maybe remove those from the section title

Anything else that needs special handling or that you're unsure of

Previous Proofreaders' Notes

  • put this closer to the top of the guidelines (from PM received 6/5)

Specific Guidelines for Special Books

Formatting

  • forumtopic:19841: typo, "if" for "is" in special guidelines for poetry (no longer relevant since documents will be removed)

Previous Proofreader Mistakes

  • maybe add 's to title (email received 6/9)
  • change plural pronouns to singular (email received 6/9)
  • forumpost:461715: mention option of PMing the PM

Printer Errors/Misspellings

Inserting Special Characters

General things to check

  • "quote marks" vs. "quotation marks" (should we be consistent, or does it matter?)
  • "em-dash": the dictionaries I've checked use "em dash" (without the hyphen) instead. At DP it has been used pretty consistently with the hyphen, so I'm not sure whether we'd want to change this or not.

Proofreading summary

  • forumpost:329390: note url for full guidelines; say that the summary might not be as up-to-date as the real guidelines

Formatting summary

  • forumpost:329390: note url for full guidelines; say that the summary might not be as up-to-date as the real guidelines

Miscellaneous things to update

  • maybe split revision history into two documents, for P & F
