This is a list of the changes made in the guidelines version 1.9.e, dated July 19, 2007. The revision was a very minor one, including basically only typo corrections, minor wording changes, and resolution of various inconsistencies (particularly in the area of minor differences between the P and F guidelines where they should have been identical).

Changes that have been suggested, but not yet implemented, are on this other wiki page.

Minor differences between P & F guidelines

Where two versions are given in quotes, the first is from the P guidelines and the second from the F guidelines.

General

  • in the P guidelines, indented examples are indented a little more than in the F guidelines (see e.g. End-of-page Hyphenation)

Primary Rule

  • first paragraph: P guidelines have "we" where F guidelines don't in a couple places

About this document

  • 1st & 3rd paragraphs: many minor differences

Project Comments

  • P guidelines have "(Forum)" and "(See below)." not present in F guidelines

Multiple Columns

  • which/that difference
  • "re-join them" vs. "join them together" (if the former is used, make it "rejoin" instead)

Footnotes

  • F guidelines have the brackets in the red monospaced font, P guidelines don't
  • "placed right next to the word" vs. "Remove any spaces before the [—keep it right next to the word"; I think the P version is preferable, since it covers footnote anchors appearing before the word as well as after
  • "a sample" vs. "an example"
  • "endnote number or marker and don't be concerned." vs. "endnote number or marker and surround it with square brackets [ and ]."
  • "same manner as footnotes" vs. "same manner as out-of-line footnotes"
  • "retain the number or letter" vs. "just surround it with [ and ]"

Superscripts

  • "superscripts: for example," vs. "superscripts, for example:"
  • "an up-arrow followed by the superscripted text" vs. "a single caret to identify this as a superscripted abbreviation/contraction"

Dashes

  • forumtopic:23951: F guidelines are missing instructions & example that are present in P guidelines

End-of-line Hyphenation

  • "in between" vs. "in-between"

End-of-page Hyphenation

  • "hyphens or em-dashes" vs. "hyphens": maybe change both to "hyphens or dashes"

Contractions

  • printers' vs. printers
  • that vs. which

Poetry

  • "regular footnotes" vs. "usual footnotes"
  • "See instructions on Line Numbers" vs. "See Line Numbers for details"

Double quotes

  • many differences, both in wording and meaning

Single quotes

  • one paragraph vs. 2

Quote marks on each line

  • "In general" at the start of the F version

Periods Between Sentences

  • P guidelines call this section "End of Sentence Periods" instead

Punctuation

  • "This applies even to languages, such as French, which normally use spaces before punctuation characters." Sentence present in F guidelines but not P

Line Breaks

  • P guidelines are missing the text: "easily. Be especially careful about this when rejoining hyphenated words or moving words around em-dashes."

Accented/Non-ASCII Characters

  • many differences throughout the initial stuff and the Windows section

Characters with Diacritical Marks

  • "Latin" vs. "latin"
  • "coding, such as: ă becomes [)a]" vs. "coding: such as [)x]" and the rest of the sentence
  • "to which letter it applies" vs. "which letter it applies to"
  • "He or she" vs. "They"
  • drop-down vs. drop down

Non-Latin characters

  • multiple differences in the first paragraph
  • "an *" vs. "an **": change both to just "**"
  • "second round" vs. "next"
  • that vs. which (2 times)
  • "has" vs. "have"

Anything else that needs special handling ...

  • duplicate "from" in F guidelines
  • "Any comments put in by a previous volunteer must be left in place." present in F guidelines but not in P
  • extra blank lines after this section in the F guidelines, not in P

OCR Problems: Hyphens & Dashes

  • present in F but not in P

OCR Problems: Scannos

  • "can create errors in the text" vs. "can result in a word which"; P guidelines has "A word" at the start of the bulleted items instead
  • This vs. These
  • spurious quotation mark in the P guidelines
  • OCR'd vs. OCR'ed

Printer Errors/Misspellings

  • that vs. which

Suggested changes to both P & F guidelines (or I'm not sure which)

Primary Rule

  • change "puts" to "put" (match the past tense used in "wrote" in the previous sentence)

Project Comments

  • change the start of the sentence to "On the Project Page,"

Forum

  • change the start of the sentence to "On the Project Page,"

Fixing errors on previous pages

  • forumpost:216977: change "Project Comments" to "Project Page" (twice)
  • change "re-open" to "reopen"

Title page

Table of Contents

  • "35": actually 33 (checked image on Google books here)

Paragraph spacing

Large, Ornate opening Capital letter (Drop Cap)

  • change "large ... letters" to "a large ... letter"
  • forumpost:320219: change "as just the letter" to "as if it is an ordinary letter"

Poetry

  • "elm-tree hole" (in the example): should be "elm-tree bole"; it looks like a b in the image, and I confirmed the poem on Google

Tables

  • forumpost:194329: typo: missing comma after "Same" in the lower right of the 2nd example
  • 2nd example: "the form of a wire", no "a" in the image
  • put examples in the regular red font

Periods Between Sentences

  • change "scanned text" to "OCR'd text" (or OCR'ed, or something else, but not the scan)

Extra spaces

  • "A horse ; my kingdom for a horse." put this in a monospaced font; there are 3 spaces not 2 after the semicolon

Accented/Non-ASCII Characters

  • utf-8 code for oe ligatures in charts

Characters with Diacritical marks

  • typo "diaresis" should be dieresis or diaeresis

Non-Latin Characters

  • "equivalent ASCII Latin letter(s)": remove "ASCII" (we use ê and ô in transliteration, which aren't ASCII)
  • "the languages which use it" (under Cyrillic): change to "a language which uses it"
  • "Press the "Greek" button": the button is actually labelled "Greek Transliterator"

Plays

Anything else that needs special handling ...

  • "project-specific forum": change "forum" to "thread" or "forum topic"

Printers errors

P guidelines only

Summary guidelines

  • add in this section, like in the F guidelines

About this document

  • change "formatter" to "formatters"

Page Headers/Footers

  • "See the next section for a specific example.": there's no example in the next section (there is in the F guidelines, but not here)
  • in the example, there's an extra blank line before "CHAPTER XXXV."

Catchwords

  • in the last sentence, I'd change the semicolons to commas and change "also" to "and" (actually this is for P & F guidelines)
  • the TOC lists this topic in a different place than where it appears in the body of the guidelines

Tables

  • 2nd example: missing periods after the word "Copper" (twice)

Title page

  • "DODD, MEAD AND COMPANY.": no period in the image

Table of Contents

  • extra blank line after "CONTENTS"

Plays

  • "For all plays:" no need for this line, since there's no "metrical plays" section in the P guidelines
  • "a normal end-of-line reattachment": add link to end-of-line hyphenation section

Previous Proofreaders' Notes

  • "If you are formatting in a later round": change to "proofreading"

F guidelines only

General

  • add a link to the revision history, like in the P guidelines

Table of Contents

  • "CONTENTS" should have 4 blank lines before and 2 after

Chapter headers

  • "1 (one)" and "2 (two)": why not just say "one" and "two"?

Other major divisions in texts

  • mention table of contents

Sidenotes

  • "The post-processor will move them": change "them" to "it"
  • "iv. i. p. 242" (in footnote 1): the i should be 1
  • "<i>id., Aus Schwaben</i>" (footnote 4): change to <i>id.</i>, <i>Aus Schwaben</i>

Illustrations

  • "1 (one)": could just say "one" or "a"

Italics

  • "phrase, title or abbreviation": add a comma after "title"

Superscripts

  • "{ and }," no need for the comma here (or add a comma after the word "braces")

Small Caps

  • maybe add an initial line like "The markup is different for Mixed Case Small Caps and ALL SMALL CAPS:" to emphasize the difference

Letters/correspondence

  • "the start of the letter, you do not": change comma to semicolon

Quote marks on each line

  • "language specific exceptions": change to "language-specific exceptions"
  • change "Forum Discussion" to "Project Discussion"

Thought breaks

  • "stars, hyphens or some other character": add a comma after "hyphens".
  • Also add a comma in the next paragraph after "time"

Indexes

  • "U.S.V." (2nd example): should be spaced as in the original
  • "escaped slave, 233;" (2nd example): semicolon is a period in the original

Plays

Proofreading summary

  • forumtopic:16651:
    • "(See the footnotes at the bottom of the page." missing close parenthesis
    • long s is shown by an f
  • forumtopic:18108:
    • Missing a space here: "symbols(*, †, ‡, §, etc.)" and another (proportional) font seems to have crept into the right column.
    • The last paragraph on the first page is only left-justified, not double-justified, looks kind of odd.
  • forumpost:241341: end of 5th paragraph, quote mark is facing the wrong way in 'tis (in the left column)
  • page 1:
    • "BOLD--": 2 hyphens are in bold for no apparent reason
    • "Sometimes a text": remove "a"
    • change "project forum" to "project discussion"
  • page 2:
    • change wording on dashes, since "long dash" usually refers to a dash the length of 2 ems at DP
    • add in something about long dash = 4 hyphens
    • "em dash": change to "em-dash"
    • "retaining line-breaks": unnecessary hyphen
    • "Indices": guidelines use "Indexes"

Formatting summary

  • forumtopic:21425:
    • remove bold in heading
  • forumtopic:18108:
    • "origninal" (on 2nd page)
    • Missing a space here: "symbols(*, †, ‡, §, etc.)" and another (proportional) font seems to have crept into the right column.
    • The last paragraph on the first page (continuing on second page) is only left-justified, not double-justified, looks kind of odd.
    • In the part about footnotes, I think "leaving a blank line" reads smoother than "having a blank line."
  • forumpost:241341: end of 5th paragraph, quote mark is facing the wrong way in 'tis (in the left column)
  • page 1:
    • remove bold in chapter heading
    • "Each new paragraph" is bold for no apparent reason
    • in that paragraph the line breaks don't match in the two columns
    • "e.g.": unspaced in the left column, but probably was supposed to be spaced there
  • page 2:
    • "em-dashes, tag": change comma to semicolon
    • "appear as": should be "appear, as"
    • line breaks don't match in the footnote paragraph
    • "Indices": guidelines use "Indexes"

General things to check

  • hyphenation: "re-[something]," "mark-up," "as is"
  • colon usage: some colons should be semicolons in various places throughout
  • OCR'd vs. OCR'ed
  • "scan" vs. "OCR": use "scan" only for the image
  • discussion, forum, thread (& combinations thereof): check that "forum" isn't used to talk about a particular thread/topic
