Purpose
This page is intended to serve as a collection of examples of good ways to format tables in plaintext.
Layout
The examples are presented as a series of wiki tables. Each table comprises 3 rows:
- Row 1 has 2 columns and contains bibliographic data that identifies the source of the table and includes:
- title of DP project, page and png number
- link to the DP project page
- link to original image. If a project is completed, an image may be found at the Open Library System. This serves as an archive of page images of completed DP projects. Search for the book title, locate the page, and copy the url.
- link to PG etext if it has been posted
- credits. It is nice to acknowledge the person who suggested this table, or who prepared the table
- Interesting features of the example being presented
- Row 2 is a single cell and hence spans the 2 columns above it. This contains the original image of the table. The images are normally cropped from a DP png file, sometimes reduced in size and uploaded into the wiki. A suggestion is inserted to tell the browser to display the image with a certain number of pixels, 450px is a good average, but dense tables might require up to 700px or else the text may be too small.
- Row 3 is also a single cell and contains the plaintext version of table within <pre></pre> tags to ensure it is displayed in monospace.
Sample wiki code for a table
Create a new section for each table. For your convenience, you can edit this page and copy and paste from the code below for the table below, replacing the parts in bold with desired text.
