Publishing in the 19th century was a free-for-all business, it seems. Houses came and went, merged, changed names, took back old names, etc. This page is intended not to be a comprehensive list of publishers and their works, but might be useful when trying to date a book.

A

A. L. Burt
reprinter, often of juvenile series fiction, active first third of the 20th century

C

William and Robert Chambers
Chambers's everything. Prolific repurposers, these brothers were champions at reissuing the same work in different guises. See, for instance, Chambers's Edinburgh Journal, or Chambers's Miscellany.

L

F. M. Lupton
reprinter of novels. These often undated books are usually octavo with crumbling pulp paper, often with tight margins, dropped letters and missing punctuation.
