About the Strand Magazine

The late Victorian era saw an explosion in the number of monthly pictorial magazines. The most successful, and longest running, of these was undoubtedly The Strand Magazine. A large part of its early success was due to it being the first publisher of many Sherlock Holmes stories -- indeed, the subscription level fell significantly when Holmes was 'killed' on the Reichenbach Falls. Doyle continued to contribute many non-Holmes stories, and in later years many other talented authors appear, including P. G. Wodehouse, H. G. Wells, E. Nesbit, H. Rider Haggard, and Rudyard Kipling.
