Notes:

  1. Whichever operating system you use, you will need to have Python 3 installed. If you have installed Ebookmaker, you may already have Python installed. If you do not have Python 3 installed, you can download it from the python.org download site. Any supported release of Python 3.8 through 3.11 should work. Releases after Python 3.11 will not work as ppgen has not been updated for use with more recent versions.
  2. If you're on Windows 10 or 11, you can also install Python 3 via the Microsoft Store as a Windows App. I have not tried that and cannot provide further advice. If you choose to download directly from python.org (my current recommendation) you may find that you need to use the Windows Settings to disable some App Execution Aliases that Windows 10/11 install automatically to direct you to the Microsoft Store. If you get an error message about Python not being installed after you think you've installed it, follow the instructions in the message.

To install ppgen, choose the development version. Generally the development version is more up-to-date with bug fixes and enhancements. For details about these versions see the ppgen Release Notes page. The development version now outputs HTML5. The production version will trash any special characters such as Greek, em dashes, etc.

Download the .zip file, unzip it, and save the ppgen.py program in the directory where you store other DP tools, such as (for Windows) c:\dp\tools. It is best if the directory name and the path do not contain any spaces.

Windows

In the Windows world, post-processors tend to set up their filesystem to their own liking. There may be a "best way" but I don't know what it is. Here, we present several users' configurations.
