GUIGUTS VERSION 2 MANUAL

Up to date with release 2.0.10 (December 2025)

View Menu

The View Menu primarily controls what is visible Guiguts' main window.

Split Text Window

This causes the text window to be split horizontally, allowing the viewing and editing of two separate parts of the current document. The focus, and hence the insert cursor, will be in one of these two halves, and when text is added or deleted, the change will occur in the half that currently has focus.

If the cursor is in one of the text panes, you can use <Tab> (to move to the next screen) and Shift+<Tab> (previous) to switch focus between the two windows.

If Auto Img is enabled, the image displayed in the image viewer will correspond to the page in the active split.

Soft Wrap (Word)

Soft Wrap (Word)
Soft Wrap (Word)

This toggle allows Guiguts to wrap long lines so that lines longer than the width of the text window are visible, rather than needing to scroll horizontally to see the ends of them. It does not change the file, just the way it is displayed within Guiguts. Note that the column ruler at the top (if shown) will show the correct column number highlighted if the correct column is visible in the ruler. If the window is only wide enough for 40 characters, and the cursor is at character 50, you will not see the highlight.

Because the soft-wrapping is done at a word boundary, the columns in the continuation lines may not align exactly. For that reason, it is not recommended to do operations like aligning table columns while viewing in soft-wrapped mode with a window that is narrower than the table. Column selection works in soft-wrapped mode, but behavior as you drag past a continuation line may seem counter-intuitive until the cursor moves to the line below. If you find it confusing, either widen your window, or turn off Soft Wrap when you need to do a column select.

If you have soft wrap turned on, you should also have line numbers turned on. Continuation lines are not indented, so the best indicator that a line is soft-wrapped is that there will be no line number for it -- the line number will stay with the first line of the wrapped line, as shown in the screenshot.

Pin / Unpin Dialog

Using this menu entry, or alternatively, right clicking in a blank space in any dialog, will "pin" (or "unpin") the current dialog. This means the dialog will remain on top of the main window, even when the focus returns to the main window. The pin/unpin setting for each dialog is remembered, so if there are some dialogs you find more convenient to use when pinned, they will appear pinned the next time you pop them.

Dock Image

The built-in Image Viewer may either be "docked" or "undocked". When docked, it is part of the main window, sitting alongside the text window. When undocked, it is in a separate floating window that the user may resize and reposition. The dock status can also be changed by clicking the Docked checkbox in the Image Viewer.

Auto Image

Enabling this option causes the scan image corresponding to the current location in the text file to be shown automatically in the Image Viewer whenever the current location moves to a new page. Auto Image can also be turned on and off by Shift-clicking the See Img button in the status bar.

See Image

This causes the image corresponding to the current location in the text file to be shown. This is a manual equivalent to Auto Image, and is equivalent to clicking the See Img button in the status bar.

Hide Image

This closes the Image Viewer, and is equivalent to clicking the Close button in the Image Viewer

Invert Image

This will invert the colors in the image, so that a black on white scan will become white on black instead. This may be more comfortable if you prefer a dark theme. This setting can also be changed by clicking the Invert checkbox in the Image Viewer.

Message Log

Any warnings or errors that Guiguts outputs are captured in the Message Log window. From there they can be selected, copied and then pasted into a forum post to ask for assistance with a problem that has occurred.

Full Screen

The usual window manager "Maximize" button (or double clicking the title bar) makes the Guiguts window take up the whole screen. On Macs, this can also be achieved using the Option key with the green "gumdrop" window button. Maximize works well on all types of computer.

The "Full Screen" button in the View menu causes Guiguts to occupy the whole screen but without the window manager title bar, giving a slightly larger Guiguts window. The equivalent on Macs is clicking the green "gumdrop" window button without holding the Option key. However, on Macs, the behavior of Guiguts when Full Screen can be unexpected and is not recommended. Full Screen works fine on Windows and Linux systems.
