Multiple symbols
When a book uses symbols for footnote references, the proofreaders replace all of them with asterisks: [*]. Formatters replace those asterisks with A, B, C, etc. This page has two such footnotes.
The proofreaders did nothing special with the actual footnotes. Formatters enclose each of them in their own footnote tag. If the footnotes used symbols, we replace those symbols with the same letters we assigned in the corresponding references.
