An emoticon (also smiley) is either a sequence of ordinary printable characters (such as :-) ) or a small image (such as Biggrin.gif), used to represent a human facial expression and convey an emotion in a posting to the DP Forum.

  • For more information about creating a posting on the DP Forum, see this article.

Why use emoticons?

Adding emoticons in a posting to the DP Forum is good way to make the posting more personal. They can also help to express emotions (hence the name) of the author and thus help to prevent misunderstandings often inherent in written-only communication.

How to add an emoticon

When creating a posting to the DP Forum, a selection of emoticons are displayed to the left of the text window. Additional emoticons are available by clicking on the View more Emoticons link below the displayed emoticons.

To add an emoticon to the posting:

  • choose an emoticon and click on it.
    • If Internet Explorer is being used, the emoticon will appear where the cursor has been placed.
    • If Firefox is being used, the emoticon will appear at the end of the posting; then cut and paste the emoticon anywhere in the posting.
