DP Official Documentation talk:Proofreading/Writing Good Proofer's Notes
First Item: "All notes should be placed right next to the word in question[**note], with a space or punctuation afterwards, not on a separate line, not with additional space before the note, using square brackets and TWO asterisks."
I think this should have a correct and wrong example. I read this to mean: "This proofer note is correcct[**correct]." instead of "This proofer note is not correcct.[**correct]"
I have always used the first example and believe seeing a post to that effect.
Formatting errors in the original
I would qualify the item about "If the previous proofer left an entirely[**italics??] unnecessary note ..." to allow for the case where the printers of the original made some omission or mistake in the formatting. Our formatters will be scanning for italics etc. already there on the page, and may not be reading every word with close attention as we do at the proofing stage. So they may not pick up cases where there clearly should[**italics?] be italics, but in fact there are none. Noyster (talk) 03:41, 13 May 2020 (EDT)
