This is a work-in-progress document about the in-development new proofreading interface. This page is not final / official until this warning is removed and the title no longer contains "DP Code" in it.

New browser requirements

These are the new minimum browser requirements for the new proofreading interface.

  • Chrome 109
  • Firefox 115
  • Safari 15
    • macOS users on High Sierra and Mojave can still use Chrome or Firefox.
  • Microsoft Edge 109
  • Opera 95

This provides support for:

  • Windows 7 and later
  • macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and later

Features of the new PI

  • Page controls (Save, Exit, Done, Done & Next, etc) are always available and can be used in both WordCheck and Format Preview.
  • Like the current interfaces, the new PI supports a text-only, WordCheck, and Format Preview mode.
  • WordCheck results are shown in-line and changes can be made to any page text while in WordCheck.
  • Proofreading preferences, like the font, font size, and line spacing, are saved upon leaving the proofreading interface and made available across proofreading sessions, browsers, and computers.
  • The toolbar can be completely hidden freeing up space, particularly useful in horizontal mode.
  • The user's theme is carried over into the new PI, including dark mode support in Charcoal.
  • The page image can be automatically scrolled with the text.
  • Line numbers are available in the page text pane.
  • Users can swap quickly and easily between the vertical and horizontal layouts without a round-trip to the server.

Changes from the existing Standard and Enhanced Interfaces

  • The new interface will replace both the Standard and Enhanced interfaces when it is deployed -- there will not be a time where all three interfaces are available.
  • JavaScript is required to use the new interface.
  • Existing user proofreading profiles will be removed -- a user's proofreading preferences will be configured and persisted automatically from within the new proofreading interface.
  • WordCheck and Format Preview tracking are saved when a page is saved, not when leaving the WordCheck or Format Preview modes.
  • The "hide character picker" now operates to hide/show the entire toolbar.
