Adopt A Project

Welcome to The Orphanage

This page is intended to be a clearing house for our orphaned, abandoned, and otherwise long-forgotten projects that are still plodding their way through the rounds. Some of the Project Managers (PMs) have been absent from the PGDP site for over a year and these projects are now being reassigned to other PMs.

PMs who want to list their own projects for adoption may add those here as well.

How does this differ from the Project Adoption Center?

The page commonly referred to as the Project Adoption Center is well-suited for its purpose; it is a place for Content Providers (CPs) to list their new projects for PMs to pick up, as well as PMs to list their own projects to be reassigned.

Most of the projects on this page are beyond the New Project stage and no longer have active PMs to coordinate reassignment. For this reason, they are not arranged by username.

Indicate interest in projects available to be adopted

Please include projectid, one per line, and sign the line. If you sign with four tildes in a row (~~~~), your username and the timestamp will be appended. Note that this must be done in "Edit Source" mode; you cannot use wiki markup in the visual editor.

Example
If I type ~~~~
This replaces it on the page once saved: -- srjfoo 22:28, 5 October 2023 (EDT)

Note that this is not a substitute for sending a request to db-req, but a means of letting others know that you are interested in a project and ready and willing to take on evaluating it.

Who is eligible to adopt these projects?

Anyone who meets the Access Requirements for Project Managers. Post Processors assigned to the projects are given first consideration.

In some cases, if a member does not quite meet the Access Requirements, limited Project Manager access can be requested. This access is granted on a case-by-case basis. It has several applications, but for the purpose of adoptions it can be granted to members who want to try managing projects but are not interested in creating new projects. This special access allows the PM to do most things full-access PMs can--except create new projects and move projects from Unavailable states; a friendly Project Facilitator can help with this.

If you are not yet enabled as a PM or limited-access PM, follow the instructions in the Access Requirements to request access.

A word of caution: we do not want PMs adopting more projects than they can comfortably handle. We have no desire to see these projects being returned to The Orphanage. For this reason, we may limit the number of projects assigned to individual PMs.

What special care do these projects need?

Their care and feeding may vary widely. Some have already been checked for problems and fixed, others are in need of renovation. Some are Retreads and have been sent back to P1 to go through the rounds again according to the current guidelines.

Each newly-assigned PM is expected to check through the project and correct any problems found. The Project completeness checklist can be useful for this assessment. The Word Lists and instructions in the Project Comments should be updated as appropriate.

How do I get assigned as PM for an Orphan?

If the Claimed by line is blank or reads Unclaimed you may submit a request. To prevent duplicate adoption requests, edit the project listing on this page and change the |Claimed by line to read |Claimed by=username (add the equal sign and your PGDP username).

Then send an email to db-req at pgdp dot net. Include your PGDP username, the project title and projectID in your request.

Now Available for Adoption

This space temporarily vacant. Thank you for your interest--check again later for more arrivals.

Maintenance Notes for PFs/Squirrels

Before adding a project to this wiki page, please check to see if it has already been posted at PG by someone else. It might also be a good idea to check again before reassigning, depending on how long it has been listed here.

When adding Notes make sure to add the equal sign, no spaces (Notes becomes Notes=any notes worth writing are worth writing right.)

To add a new project

The Project Information that appears in each entry is self-updating. To add a new project listing: copy the code below for using the {{PM AdoptionInfo}}  template in conjunction with the projectinfo tag to the desired placement under the section Now Available for Adoption, insert the correct Project ID, and add any known history of the project after the Notes parameter. Notes can include repairs that have been done, reason why it is being Retreaded, known issues not fixed, etc. Unused fields may be left empty.

<projectinfo id="projectIDxxxxxxxxxxxxx">{{PM AdoptionInfo
|Notes
|Claimed by
}}
</projectinfo>

Note: The appearance of the summary table might change.

When a project has been reassigned...

Make sure the original PM is given proper credit in the project! If they are already listed as the CP for the Images or Text files, all is well.

Move the entire project listing to the Happily Adopted section and change the template name after the <projectinfo> tag from {{PM AdoptionInfo}}  to {{PM Adopted}}  as shown below. Then remove the entire "Claimed by" line and adjust the notes as appropriate.

<projectinfo id="projectIDxxxxxxxxxxxxx">{{PM Adopted
|Notes
}}
</projectinfo>
