Preparing and facilitating projects
- To provide content using harvested scans, no requirements
- Otherwise, a scanner
For more information, see the Content Providing FAQ. While not required, a CP mentor is strongly recommended. To request a mentor, please send an email to the General Manager. Please indicate what Operating System you use, and any software you think is relevant.
Providing OCR texts
- OCR software

- A minimum of 4-6 months since registration at DP is preferable
- 400 F1 pages
- A PM Mentor
Request PM status by e-mailing the General Manager.
If you have a book for which you have obtained a copyright clearance and you are not yet eligible for Project Managing: you can choose to wait until you have been granted access (perhaps start prepping it with guidance from a PM Mentor) or, if you are anxious to see it go through the rounds sooner, you might consider offering it as a Content Provider--in which case another Project Manager will adopt it.

Because of the amount of regular practice required to maintain Project Management skills, DP may remove that access if a volunteer has not worked in that area for an extended period.
Working in The Rounds
- A DP account
It doesn't take much time or effort to register for a DP account.
- 300 P1 pages
- Pass the Moderate Proofreading Quiz and Tutorial, Part 1 (quiz results expire after six months)
- 21 days since registration at DP
You can monitor your progress toward the requirements, and apply for access, on the P2 "home" page.
You could qualify to become a Mentor:
- when you are comfortable with the Guidelines,
- have qualified for P2 access and are comfortable working in that round
- have been at DP for at least 3 months.
To request access, please send an email to the General Manager (dp-genmgr at pgdp dot net) asking to be granted mentor status. The GM will arrange review of your projects that have been seen by the P3 proofers, look at the "diffs" and respond. If you are granted access you are free to dive in to the MENTOR projects! (If you already have P3 access, you'll be granted mentor status immediately upon your request).
- 150 P2 pages across at least three projects, with at least 50 which have been proofread by P3 volunteers. These pages should indicate proofreading proficiency covering a range of matter including footnotes, tables, indexes, illustration captions, poetry and/or sidenotes.
- 50 F1 pages
- Pass the Moderate Proofreading Quiz and Tutorial, Part 2 (quiz results expire after six months)
- 42 days since registration
You can monitor your progress toward the requirements, and apply for access, on the P3 "home" page. After these requirements are met, the volunteer's P2 pages are reviewed before access is granted. See P3 qualification and Am I Ready For P3? for more details.
Please note that an evaluator will check over at least 50 of your recent P2 pages that have been completed in P3. (Except for special circumstances, we do not review pages until they have been through P3!) Due to the extra abilities a project manager has over his or her projects, pages proofread in projects in which the project manager and the applicant are the same will not be eligible for evaluation.

Although volunteers may apply to work in F2 after they have completed 400 F1 pages, provided it is at least 91 days since registration and 60 days since their most recent F2 application, there is a great deal more required in terms of formatting skill and experience.

Creating and finalizing e-texts

Post-Processing, Direct Upload and Post-Processing Verification
- 400 F1 pages
With the introduction of HTML, and the e-reader formats, PPing has become a much more complex task. Consequently, it's important that new PPers gain the necessary experience before they are granted Direct Upload (DU).
The pre-DU period is an important learning period and the opportunity for a new PPer to work with experienced PPVers should be valued.
To qualify for DU, PPers must demonstrate a capacity for consistent high quality PPing.
- the 8 PP projects most recently verified must total to at least 1,000 pages and must include:
- at least 3 "excellent"
- at least 7 "very good" or "excellent"
- no "fair" in the most recent 7 projects
- a "good" in the final project requires that an additional project be submitted
- In the last 8 qualifying projects, at least 3 of the projects should be Average or Difficult and each of them must contain three special elements such as:
- Illustrations requiring advanced preparation and/or difficult placement
- Multiple Languages
- Musical Notation and Files
- Extensive mathematical/chemical notation
In order for PPers to get a range of feedback on their projects as they progress towards DU access, and to avoid any accusations of unfairness, at least 3 different PPVers should be involved in evaluating the different qualifying projects. In languages where there is a shortage of PPVers able to evaluate projects, this may not be required.
When you have met the requirements for DU access, one of the PPV coordinators will be in touch. He or she will give you the information you need in order to upload directly, and also offer you support for your first few uploads if needed. Because of the amount of regular practice required to maintain Post-Processing Direct Upload skills, DP may remove that access if a volunteer has not worked in that area for an extended period.
It is important that a PPVer possess good mentoring skills in order to assist new PPers in learning the art of postprocessing. PPVers should also be skilled with HTML and CSS in order to assist PPers in troubleshooting their submissions.
PPV status may be granted once 8 PP projects, with a total of at least 800 pages, have been uploaded without problems directly to PG provided the projects comply with the current PPV standards (including Strongly Recommended items).
For small LOTE communities, PPV status may be granted earlier.
All PPV coordinators must agree on PPV appointments. New PPVers are provided with useful information on PPVing support for their first few PPVs.
